A Catalyst for Transforming Telecommunications

Photonic Integration Research Inc (PIRI) is an example of the value and impact Battelle has had on transforming the telecommunications industry. PIRI is a joint venture between Battelle, NTT DoCoMo, Mitsubishi and Mitsubishi International that combined the pioneering technical work from Battelle and NTT DoCoMo, with groundbreaking fiber optic research from Battelle to commercialize fiber optic devices so they could be more easily and reliably reproduced. PIRI also used its technology assets to develop high-throughput automated testing systems that certified its optical circuits maintained a high level of outstanding reliability and performance. PIRI was sold to SDL who was later purchased by JDS Uniphase. At the time, the transaction was valued at approximately U.S. $1.8 billion.
